Oceaneers arrives in Early Access with immediate comparisons to Oxygen Not Included, and while those similarities exist, the game quickly establishes its own identity within a water-world setting.
Players manage a colony on a floating island with the goal of expanding it by adding more floating islands to it for more room. Meanwhile there is also the secrets under the islands. Exploration plays a significant role, with distinct ocean regions to discover and expeditions that extend beyond the immediate base. Normal colony survival elements mingle with these components that create a somewhat unique experience and game world.
The scale of the world feels larger than expected, offering more room for discovery and progression than its initial presentation suggests.
One of the standout elements is the interface design. Character and system information is presented in a stylized format that feels like flipping through a manila envelope file, research selection done on an architects blueprints, adding personality without sacrificing usability. Combined with the game’s quirky humor, it creates a cohesive and enjoyable tone.
For an Early Access release, the level of polish is nice. Systems feel stable, presentation is well done, and the overall experience leaves a strong first impression.
Oceaneers is therefore recorded as Alive.
The ocean is wide.
The colony expands.
Pronouncement: Still very much alive.
