STAR WARS Zero Company was always going to get compared to X-COM, but after four hours we can safely declare it is not.
The tactical foundation is familiar, but no grid system, destructible cover and environmental interactions give fights some personality of their own. Your crew bonding and gaining synergy with each other over time also is a great mechanic I look forward to watching play out.
The presentation may be the strongest part so far. The game looks gorgeous, captures the Star Wars feel extremely well, and the story and voice acting have both made a solid first impression.
There are frustrations. Character creation currently offers only six alien species, which feels surprisingly limited, and Overwatch badly needs clearer feedback about who is actually covered and whether terrain is blocking a shot. Some aiming lines also occasionally do strange things through objects. I question the percentage chances of shots being accurate, but they feel wrong in a different way than X-COM. We will see how that plays out though, I may have just had bad streaks.
Those are fixable problems, though. The important part is that four hours in, I want more.
STAR WARS Zero Company is therefore recorded as Alive.
The company has formed.
Now fix the Overwatch.
Pronouncement: Still very much alive.
