Star Trek: Outposts Unknown has taken a beating in Steam reviews, and while the game certainly has problems, some of the criticism seems considerably more dramatic than the situation deserves.

After nearly ten hours across two streams, I’ve enjoyed my time with the game. The biggest problems aren’t with the base gameplay but with how poorly the game sometimes explains itself. The tutorial needs better pacing, several UI elements could communicate information more clearly, and some additional quality-of-life features would go a long way.

These are all issues an experienced strategy and colony building player can probably figure out and work through on their own, but less experienced or new players attracted by the Star Trek connection may struggle with. Fortunately, the developers have already acknowledged plans to address some of these issues in the coming weeks.

Despite those frustrations, I had trouble putting the game down today. I was constantly busy with exploring and building and unlocking more content. There’s still plenty I want to explore, including eventually expanding to other planets, and I may even sneak in more time off stream.

Star Trek: Outposts Unknown enters Cryostasis, not because I want to stop playing, but because the schedule demands we move onto other new games and with planned improvements from the developers I am excited to see the changes they make in the coming weeks.

The mission isn’t over.

Starfleet is just revising our orders.

Pronouncement: Placed into cryostasis.
