Mewgenics finally released today, and it wasted absolutely no time making it clear it was from the people behind The Binding of Isaac and because of that I bet there are a lot first time turn-based tactical gamers now.

From the art style to the amazing soundtrack, and from the almost annoyingly endless meowing of cats to quirky characters and enemies, the game instantly stands out as quality.

The core game-loop is raising cats and taking them on a combat filled adventure. Combat itself is very enjoyable and feels like a spin of Into the Breach’s turn-based tactical combat. But with cats and piles of poop.

On stream, the immediate reaction bounced between curiosity and confusion. Most seemed to enjoy the gameplay and plenty of laughs were had as we discovered as much as we could.

That said, there’s clearly a lot of depth here. The number of items and abilities you can find for your kitties feels endless early on and hopefully it stays that way for a while because the combos will make for a lot of different types of runs.

Is it for everyone? Nothing is but so far it’s easy to recommend. Is it interesting enough to keep playing? Without a doubt.

Pronouncement: Still alive, under observation.
