Company of Heroes 3: Final Stand takes an unusual approach to expanding an existing game. While technically a standalone release, it functions much like a new game mode for Company of Heroes 3, even integrating with the base game for owners while also being sold separately.

The centerpiece is Last Stand, a roguelite-inspired survival mode where increasingly powerful waves of enemies must be held back through smart unit choices, a little RNG, upgrades, and tactical positioning. It offers a fresh spin on the traditional Company of Heroes formula.

Unfortunately, the session itself was cut short by technical problems related to my Linux/Proton setup. While frustrating, those issues aren’t something that can fairly be held against the game itself, as Linux support remains an extra effort that not every developer chooses to pursue.

What time was spent with Final Stand was enjoyable enough. The new mode provides an entertaining diversion from the standard campaign and multiplayer experience, but it ultimately feels more like a basic DLC packaged as a standalone title than a completely new game.

Whether that approach justifies a separate release, and purchase, will likely depend on how much players value the roguelite mode on its own.

For this report, however, Company of Heroes 3: Final Stand is recorded as Dead.
